How I set my clients up for easy-breezy-beautiful portrait and wedding photos every time.

As a veteran wedding and portrait photographer with over a decade of experience working with clients to capture everything from family photos to elaborate, mutli-day wedding events, I have more than a few tricks up my sleeve to help craft a photography experience that leaves my clients feeling relaxed, comfortable, and at ease. Believe it or not, almost every client expresses the fear that they feel awkward in front of the camera or are worried they won’t be photogenic. Thankfully, I have a tried and true system for creating a comfortable process that leaves my clients with photos that feel natural – and look like effortlessly beautiful candids. What’s the secret? Here are 10 ways I can help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera – and get you gorgeous photos in the process!

  1. Give Clear, Easy-to-Follow Posing Directions
Don’t worry about remembering all the poses! I’ll guide you through everything step by step. If something feels awkward, we’ll tweak it until it feels natural for you.
My goal is to make sure you look and feel relaxed in every shot, so I’ll direct you on where to place your hands, how to stand, and what to do with your feet. No need to overthink it!

  1. Create a Comfortable Environment
I’ll help you feel comfortable with a calm, laid-back vibe. No stiff or over-the-top posing here!
I keep the atmosphere relaxed with light conversation and easy to follow directions and prompts. Think of me as a supportive guide, not a drill sergeant trying to turn you into America’s Next Top Model.

  1. Encourage Laughter and Interaction
You don’t have to be ‘model perfect.’ The best photos come when you’re laughing, interacting, and just being yourselves!
I might ask you to whisper something funny or get you to talk to each other like you normally would. That genuine joy will come through in your photos.

  1. Use Movement for More Natural Photos
Let’s take a walk, dance, or gently sway. Movement gives us candid moments that look so much more relaxed than stiff poses.
If you’re feeling tense, moving around a bit will help shake it off and create photos that feel authentic.

  1. Give You a Break
If you’re ever feeling tired, overwhelmed, or need a moment, just let me know. We can take a short break to refresh and regroup.
Weddings and engagement sessions can feel long. I’ll be mindful of your energy levels and keep the pace comfortable for you – sometimes we all need a little break!

  1. Guide You Through the Day
I’m not just your photographer, I’m also here to help with the flow of the day, so you don’t have to worry about timing or coordinating the next shot.
I’ll make sure everything goes smoothly, from the moment we start the shoot to the last photo of the day. My job is to anticipate what needs to happen and when to get you magazine-worthy moments without you even realizing they’re happening.

  1. Be There for Emotional Support
Feeling nervous? I’ve got you. If you’re stressed, I’ll remind you that this is a joyful time and I’m here to make it fun.
It’s completely normal to feel a little anxious before photos, especially on a big day like a wedding. I’ll be there to remind you to take a breath and enjoy the process, and I’ll also be your personal buffer system if you need a break.

  1. Compliment You!
I’ll make sure you know how great you look at every stage of the shoot.
I’ll be constantly giving you positive reinforcement, helping you feel more confident with every shot.

  1. Adjust the Setting for Comfort
We’ll choose locations where you feel comfortable — whether you’re in a quiet park or a favorite spot — to make sure you’re in your element.
Whether you prefer a cozy indoor vibe or an open outdoor space, I’ll help you pick the location that suits you best.

  1. Focus on the Connection, Not Just the Poses
I’ll make sure the focus is on your love story and your connection with each other, not just perfect poses.
Sometimes, the best moments happen when you’re not even thinking about the camera. I’ll encourage you to focus on each other and enjoy the moment.

The last way I help ensure my clients feel their best in photos? It’s attention to detail and a little editing magic. I’m going to make sure the images you get showcase you at your very best – and I will do the extra work while we’re taking the shot to make sure your hair is just right, your dress is fluffed, and your makeup is fresh. I’ll also do the extra work on the backend to remove flyaway hair from portraits or retouch that last minute breakout right out of your memory – because knowing I have your back throughout the entire process is a huge part of making sure you feel comfortable in front of the camera!

If you want to work with a photography team that will go the extra mile to make sure you look and feel incredible in your photos, get in touch with me today! I take a very limited number of clients each year to ensure I can give them all the kind of service and attention we just talked about, so reach out today to book your spot on our wedding and portrait calendar. I can’t wait to chat with you!
