This one time, I was in line at Starbucks. One of the Starbucks locations at O’Hare, actually. A little backstory is needed for this story to be grasped: See, we had booked this trip to visit family out in Seattle, and my husband took care of travel plans, and we were supposed to fly out on the Friday after I finished school (my day job = teaching today’s youth). Except on Thursday, we got this text update from the Park N’ Fly service that we could check our Prius in. On Thursday.

Not Friday. Thursday. Let that sink in.

We live 2.5 hours from O’Hare, and at this point I’m just getting done administering a final to my seniors. I’m not packed. I’m not even at home. So husband – poor husband – has to let me know that (whoops!) he got our travel dates wrong and in fact, our plane was leaving in less than five hours. I won’t even go into the chaos that ensued but we did make it to the airport with enough time for me to hit up my dearly beloved Starbucks, toddler in arms. And the guy at the counter? He hears my order for a grande soy gingerbread latte and says, “You’re the mom of a toddler in an airport – you look like you need to upgrade to venti.” Ha. DONE. BOOM. #thebaristaspeaksthetruth

Anyway – that story was totally extraneous but it does make the point. Sometimes, we moms have to make the upgrade. Heck, not even just moms. All of us. Treat yourself. Make the upgrade. You need it sometimes and you owe it to yourself. Life is short, carpe diem, YOLO, and such sentiments. You’ll thank me, really.

A fun thing I recently let myself upgrade – my basic jeans and tee “mom” uniform. I really do like fashion, but really – let’s be honest – most of the time I’m so lazy. I would wear yoga pants and a grey tee every day. This is my attempt to salvage my fashion sense while still staying comfy.

(1) Stacked rings & cleaned-up nails. Especially loving the midi ring trend right now, but I’ve always been a fan of simple stacked rings. They’re easy accessories for me because I rarely take them off and therefore rarely have to remember to put them back on. Having clean, manicured nails just looks and feels so nice, and you absolutely do not have to splurge for a salon manicure. Just grab a file and do it DIY style. While I love dark colors, they’re not super mom-on-the-go friendly and always chip in 3 minutes for me, so I usually favor more natural shades that don’t emphasize chips too much these days. (My go-to favorite is Essie’s Fiji!)

(2) Embellished ponytail holders. Huge fan of the easy ponytail over here, so when I discovered Anthropologie’s pretty versions for less than $10, it was seriously love at first sight.

(3) Multiple earrings. Hello, ’90s flashback! I love that this trend from my youth is back again and I’m embracing in in full swing. Keep it pretty and feminine rather than edgy with delicate studs.

(4) Monogramed disc necklace. Mine is by Von Eshna and has an “A” on the front for my girl, Aria, and her birthdate engraved on the back. I wear it every day and it’s one of my most beloved items.

(5) Boyfriend jeans. They’re the denim equivalent of pajama pants. What’s not to love? It doesn’t hurt that they’re totally on trend and add a cool-girl vibe to most outfits. Win/win.

(6) Grey tee. Slouchy grey tees with the perfect fit are my weakness. They’re just so perfect though! Classic, casual, easy….I love them. My favorite tees are from Madewell, Gap, and (if I can find them on sale) James Perse.

(7) The perfect zip-up hoodie. Hoodies and I go way back. We’re totally bff’s. I have laid aside my oversized college ones in favor of more fitted, zip-up, jacket styles though. My favorite is a scuba hoodie from Lululemon in an army green color (“heathered fatigue scuba” to be exact – I don’t think it’s online quite yet).

(8) Ballet flats. Heels are awesome but they kill me. I wimp out after an hour. Can’t do ’em. Flip flops and Uggs are wonderful, but they just aren’t that chic. Ballet flats, though? Perfection. I recently discovered these from Target (yes, Target) for less than $20 and started buying every color because they’re amazing and totally wear-them-all-day comfortable. Someday I’ll splurge on a great pair, but in the meantime, these fit my feet and my budget well!
